Name
Power Assist for Manual Wheelchairs: A Clinical Perspective
Description

Power assist systems have advanced significantly in recent years. These technologies are often used to enhance the functionality of a manual wheelchair or serve as an alternative to a power wheelchair. This course explores rear, main, and front-wheel motor options for power assist. We will review clinical indications, objective measures for technology selection, and funding criteria for reimbursement.

Proposed Learning Objective (1)
Describe the three types of power assist systems that can be added to manual wheelchairs by explaining how each system functions and when it is most appropriately used.
Proposed Learning Objective (2)
Identify at least two client characteristics to consider when selecting a power assist system and explain how those characteristics influence clinical decision-making.
Proposed Learning Objective (3)
Identify at least two funding considerations when recommending a power assist device and explain how each impacts coverage and reimbursement.
Proposed Learning Objective (4)
Describe at least three clinical benefits of using power assist systems and explain how they improve performance in mobility-related activities of daily living (MRADLs).
